Anthony Wayne Junior High students and staff will have access to Tier I and Tier II interventions for personal development and wellness thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Ohio School Wellness Initiative. The funds will be used by the AWJH Student Assistance Program (SAP) which is responsible for implementing Tier II and Tier III levels of support for behavioral intervention and support.
Some of the resources that will be made available to students as a part of this grant are:
- Coping/calming boxes for every classroom
- Homework, Organization and Planning resources
- Second Step program materials
- Character Strong Gym materials
- Signs of Suicide program subscription
- Take Time for You
- 180 Days of Self Care for Busy Educators
Ohio's Model SAP aligns with the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports pyramid. Universal (Tier I) programming benefits all students, Tier II programming is designed for students who are identified as at-risk, and Tier III services are provided to students identified as having behavioral health and mental health challenges.
AWJH SAP team is made up of administrators, school counselors, the school psychologist, nurse, school resource officer and teachers who meet weekly to identify students needing support, review current intervention plans and review progress of students receiving intervention support.
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
The AWJH PBIS system focuses on four key messages:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
- Be Involved
