Winter Weather Awareness Week

Did you know it is Winter Weather Awareness Week? Winter weather is nothing new to Northwest Ohio. No need to freak out. Here are some supportive snow driving tips:

Depending on the weather and road conditions. You will have to actually SLOW DOWN , this helps increase your ability to stop and increases your distance between other vehicles. If you do not understand SLOWING DOWN .  Pretend you are driving your grandmother to church while she precariously balances her best cake or crock pot recipe on her lap.

Ensure your vehicles windows are free of snow/ice for good visibility. Don't scrape a 8-12 inch inch hole and think you are good to go. You are not a submarine commander. A periscope view does not work well with driving in winter weather.

1 to 3 inches of snow can be as slippery as a foot. Ice is very tricky. JUST SLOW DOWN .

Make sure your wipers are cleaned off and you have a full levels of wiper and blinker fluid. A full gas tank is also great! Also, clean off the snow on top of your vehicle. Don’t be lazy, no one likes a wall of snow hitting their windshield on the highway. It can be dangerous!

Everyone should have a seatbelt on in your car. Safety and family first. In-laws included.  An emergency kit is a good idea). Left over happy meal boxes will not sustain you.

Turn on your headlights (unless you have a fancy car/truck that does that automatically).

No doubt you have the ability to color inside the lines. It is imperative you do the same when driving. SLOW DOWN , stay between the lines, and ensure you are maximizing your distance from other vehicles.

As much as your Human Resource Department tells you to keep your hands to yourself at work. The same applies on the road. Do not let your car touch another car. Both can be costly and unwanted.  SLOW DOWN .

There are ditches in Lucas County. Practice the coloring book rules while also SLOWING DOWN . This should help you avoid the ditch monster.

Your 4-wheel drive doesn't equal your vehicles ability to have 4-wheel stop. You need to slow down as well. Your “tank of suburbia” does not make you invincible. Yes, you are cool blowing by everyone putzing down the snow covered roads. But how cool will it be as the same vehicles putz on by, as you sit prominently in a ditch or spun out off the road? SLOW DOWN .

Distractions don’t help. PUT THE CELL PHONE DOWN. Once you are at your destination, you have acquired the major award of “bragging rights.” Tell everyone how much of an amazing driver you are via texting and social media.
