The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office is not raising money, requesting donations or calling anyone to address any criminal justice matter with the use of VENMO or ZELLE. Such callers are not representatives of the L.C.S.O. but opportunistic miscreants attempting to bilk unsuspecting people out of their money! They also attempt to impersonate officers by using real names of staff at the L.C.S.O. Spoofing local 567 and 419 exchange numbers is their method of operation, which is an attempt in convincing you that the call is local. If you receive such a call, HANG UP THE PHONE.
On 1/26/2023 my wife received a phone call at her work place on a work phone number. The caller, using 419-731-6967 claimed to be Sgt. Derek Diggs of the Lucas Co. Sheriff’s Office. The caller informed her that she missed a court date as an expert witness on 1/19/2023 and that she was in violation (Failure to Appear). After some skepticism on her part, the caller hung up and called again but using/spoofing 419-213-4975. The caller again went over the FTA violation and giving her options on how to resolve the issue. She could go to the ATM and withdraw cash, go to Rite Aid, Use Zelle or Venmo. Once payment was received she was informed to go to 525 N. Erie, use the kiosk to get her new court date and to set up a zoom meeting with the Judge.
The intended target of this scam hung up the phone and notified local law enforcement.
