State Representative Josh Williams announced that the Ohio House of Representatives has approved House Bill 28. The bill is designed to simplify the state's property tax system, increase transparency, and prevent unintended increases in property taxes by eliminating replacement property tax levies.

According to the bill, local governments will no longer be able to propose replacement property tax levies starting with elections on or after October 21, 2025. This change aims to prevent misleading voters and unexpected increases in property taxes. Existing replacement levies will not be affected by this legislation.

Williams stated, “Throughout late 2024 and the beginning of this year, many of my constituents contacted me regarding exorbitant property tax increases.” He added that House Bill 28 is part of a broader effort to provide relief to taxpayers and curb excessive taxation by local governments. "I am thrilled to see it pass the House and eager to work on similar legislation," he said.

The bill maintains the ability for local governments to renew existing levies and propose new or increased levies directly. House Bill 28 will now proceed to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
