The Ohio House of Representatives has approved House Bill 166, a proposal to establish March 10th as Harriet Tubman Day across the state. The bill was announced on Wednesday by State Representative Josh Williams, a Republican from Sylvania Township.
Jointly sponsored by Representative Meredith Lawson-Rowe, a Democrat from Reynoldsburg, the bill aims to commemorate the contributions of Harriet Tubman, an enduring figure in American history recognized for her leadership in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality.
In discussing the bill, Representative Williams emphasized, "Harriet Tubman’s courage, sacrifice, and leadership deserve permanent recognition. By passing H.B. 166, we ensure that her contributions are never forgotten and that future generations understand the significance of her work."
Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in 1822, escaped in 1849 and subsequently played a pivotal role in guiding many enslaved individuals to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Her influence extended to her involvement in the abolitionist movement and her contributions as a nurse and scout for the Union during the Civil War. She later became a vocal advocate for women’s suffrage.
Introduced on the 112th anniversary of Tubman's death, House Bill 166 will now proceed to the Senate for consideration.
