The Ohio House of Representatives has approved legislation aimed at enhancing the safety and effectiveness of first responders during emergencies. State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) announced the passage of House Bill 20, which proposes to elevate the penalty for obstructing official business from a second-degree misdemeanor to a first-degree misdemeanor when the victim is an emergency service responder on duty.

The bill seeks to broaden existing laws by including probation officers in the definition of emergency service responders. This move intends to ensure that all personnel involved in emergency services are protected from interference while performing their duties.

“House Bill 20 is essential to ensure that all first responders, including law enforcement, are able to carry out their duties,” said Williams. “These responders deserve protection from harassment as they keep our communities safe.”

Following its approval in the House, House Bill 20 will proceed to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
