2022 Lucas County Sheriff's Office Recognition Ceremony:
On April 10, 2022 while conducting a security round D/S Steve McClellan in booking, he saw an inmate sitting on the bathroom partition. During his attempt to de-escalate the inmate the inmate dove head first onto the floor. D/S McClellan called for backup. The inmate attempted to get back up on the partition again, and D/S McClellan tried to stop him but inmate threw himself on the floor again. This time he cut his head open causing him to bleed all over cell and officers who tried to stop him. C/O's Gumpf, Howard and Webster took control of the inmate and started first aid, Officers with the assistance of D/S Worthy where able to put the inmate in the restraint chair and continue first-aid until the nurse arrived. The inmate was transported to the hospital by EMS without any further incident.
On March 23, 2022 an inmate had heart attack while in the booking section waiting to be transported back to CCNO. After being alerted of the emergency by other inmates in the cell, Sgt. Karam and C/O Sweebe responded. C/O Sweebe noticed the inmate was not breathing and unresponsive and immediately started CPR while Sgt. Karam retrieved the AED. C/O Sweebe continued compressions while the Sgt Karam attached the AED, and continued 2 person CPR with the nurse until EMS arrived and took over. Their quick actions saved the inmates life.
On December 11, 2021 at approximately 0300 hours D/S Ray Lemble was dispatched to a residential fire in progress. Upon arriving D/S Lemble quickly evaluated the severity and entered the residence. Ensuring all residence had been evacuated, D/S Lemble surveyed the area and realized that it was an electrical fire started at an outlet. He shut the breaker box off and used the fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle to put the fire out before any fire or sheriff crews arrived. D/S Lemble’s swift actions saved multiple homes of the residents.
On December 9, 2021 C/O Michael Mcmanus noticed an inmate laying awkwardly in front of his cell door. Upon further inspection the inmate had his suicide suit around his neck. C/O Mcmanus called for backup and immediately began removing the noose with his only option left to cut the suit off the inmate’s neck. After successfully removing the noose, the nurse evaluated the inmate. C/O McManus’ quick actions restored the inmates breathing and saved his life.
On May 28, 2021 an emergency backup call was alerted over the radios in the jail, Sgt Scrutchins arrived on the 4th floor and witnessed an inmate was laying on the floor unconscious and unresponsive. Officers Rebecca Pena, Aubrey Meneval and Rachelle Ruiz-fane had begun lifesaving CPR. Their coordinated efforts in CPR caused the inmate to begin breathing. EMS showed arrived and provided a higher echelon of care and transported the inmate to the hospital. The officers quick action resulted in the inmate’s life beaning saved.
On December 8, 2021 an inmate attempted to take his life by hanging himself. The swift actions taken by officer C/O Christopher Niles during his security round and the backup officer D/S Kenneth Arp, E.C. Martinez, prevented the inmate from successfully taking his life. These officers quick thinking by removing the noose and laying him down for medical assistance saved this inmates life.
On January 19, 2022 at 0030 hours C/O Aubrey Maneval was conducting a security round in the 5 southwest module and noticed that and inmate was in the fetal position on the floor with labored breathing. She went to the observation tank got the door opened and called for help. C/O Lang and D/S Kurth ran to the tank to assist C/O Maneval. D/S Kurth applied sternum rubs along with Maneval and Lang and inmate was still responsive. Nurse Hodges was called and CPR was applied by C/Os Lang and Maneval. Counselor Pargament arrived and took CPR while Maneval used AMBU bag. EMS showed up and the inmate was transported to the Hospital where made a full recovery thanks to quick actions of these officers.
