The Ohio Alternative Resident Educator license is a pathway to classroom teaching in Ohio public schools. This pathway gives public school students and school communities the benefit of teachers who have content-related knowledge, life experience, and successful career experience they bring with them into the classroom with them.
Alternative licensure is available in designated subject areas in grades kindergarten through 12. Subject areas include business education, computer science, earth sciences, health, home economics, integrated language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, library/media, life sciences, music, physical education, physical science (chemistry), physical science (physics), TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), visual arts, intervention specialist (special education), German, Spanish.
If a public school district chooses to employ an individual who does not hold a regular teaching license, but who has earned a bachelor’s degree and has relevant experience in any of the subject areas listed above, that candidate can apply to the Ohio Department of Education for an Alternative Resident Educator license and take the necessary steps required by ODE and Maumee City Schools.
“Over the years, Maumee City Schools has hired teachers who began their career outside of education but who later felt called to become a teacher,” explains Superintendent Steve Lee. “In these cases, we had a classroom teaching position open but could not find a classically trained teacher who had the right qualifications and experience to fill the job. The district made the determination to proceed with the best candidate and work with them throughout the alternative educator pathway. And, I can say that we have never been disappointed.”
If you are an individual who has at least five years of relevant experience working in an industry other than education, you may be eligible for Ohio’s alternative licensure track. If you are hired as a classroom teacher with an alternative license, you will teach full-time and also take educational coursework outlined by ODE within a four-year timeframe so you can advance to the normal five-year professional teaching license.
