Rep. Derek Merrin's House Bill 101, known as the Epinephrine Accessibility Act, has been signed into law by Governor Kasich in Ohio. The bill aims to increase the affordability and accessibility of epinephrine auto-injectors for individuals in need. Merrin expressed that by allowing pharmacists to substitute brand-name epinephrine auto-injectors for equivalent ones, patients can benefit from lower costs. He stated, "The legislation makes it easier for Epi Pen competitors to compete, which will ultimately lead to lower costs."
Additionally, the bill permits pharmacists to dispense epinephrine auto-injectors to adults aged 18 or older under a physician's protocol. Antonio Ciaccia, Director of Government & Public Affairs for the Ohio Pharmacists Association, praised the bill, calling it a "disruptive force" that eliminates barriers between patients and life-saving medications. He highlighted that the legislation will break down regulatory barriers and encourage more competition among manufacturers, ultimately driving down prices.
Merrin expressed confidence in the impact of the Epinephrine Accessibility Act, stating, "House Bill 101 is primed to become the national model for states tackling the soaring cost of epinephrine auto-injectors." The bill was unanimously approved by both the House and Senate before being signed into law by Governor Kasich.
